How to Drink Whisky

• • Neat: Instead of on the rocks, try it neat. Tossing ice cubes in your glass is common however it is good to diverge from the routine and enjoy the purity of it unadulterated, savor the natural flavor.

 

• • Adding water to your glass of whisky will release its hidden flavor which you are otherwise missing. Ice does the same job but water will do it without freezing whisky’s subtle aromas or numbing your palate.

 

• • The choice of glass matters. A short glass with a heavy bottom is perfect for drinking the whisky neat. It satisfies the palate plus the olfaction. If you are inclined towards the palate, you can go for tall & slim glasses.

 

• • Ambient temperature affects the mouthfeel of whisky i.e. how it feels in your mouth. Thus, get a feel of your surrounding as well if you wish to relish your malt fully.

 

• • Keeping the mouth open while smelling the whisky in your glass will familiarize you with new aromas and you will notice other notes like spices and wood.

 

• • Don’t just gulp down your sip, fellas! Move it around on your tongue before swallowing it totally. This technique releases flavors of caramel toffee or vanilla. Call this a whisky chewing!

 

• • Ice dilutes the whisky in your glass, as it melts. You may use chilled whisky stones which are chunks that chill the whisky without diluting it. Hint: Larger ice cubes melt slower so whisky’s integrity lasts longer!

 

• • Try Whisky With Cocktails: Depending on your taste, you can try mixing whisky in cocktails. Some prominent whiskey-based cocktails recipes are:

 

• • 1. Whisky Sour:
       In a shaker tin, add 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz lemon juice & 1 egg white, excusing the ice. Dry shake the tin for around 15 seconds. Now, add ice and shake again; double strain it all into a chilled glass & finish it with a cherry garnish.

 

• • 1. Manhattan:
       Mix 2 oz rye whisky, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, 1 or 2 dashes of Angostura bitters and some ice. Stir it well and serve it in a chilled coupe glass with a garnishing of cherry.

 

• • 1. Old Fashioned:
       In the bottom of a rocks glass, muddle a sugar cube & 3 dashes of bitters. Pour a shot of whisky with some ice & stir the mix until the ice starts melting. Add another whisky shot. You can garnish the drink with a cherry (or an orange twist).

 

• 1. Mint Julep:
     Smash some fresh mint with a sugar cube at the bottom of the glass. Mix 2 oz of bourbon with a sugar cube & a handful of crushed ice.
