  In Japanese, roku means “six.” Suntory’s take on gin is called “six” after six quintessentially Japanese botanicals. Firstly, there’s green tea two ways: sencha and gyokuro. Cherry, also two ways: blossom and leaves. And then yuzu and Japanese pepper. There’s another eight traditional botanicals as well bringing the grand total up to fourteen.

So, the Hinch Distillery decided to name a gin after it with its Ninth Wave Gin!   Created at the Bruichladdich distillery, this superb Islay gin was distilled in the ‘ugly betty’ still described as “an oversized upside-down dustbin made of copper” by Tom Morton. Perhaps the best looking packaging we’ve ever seen for a gin – it’s not all style and no substance either. This is a world-class gin, at a proper ABV.A huge 31 botanicals go into The Botanist, including some native to Islay. It?s spicy but with great citrus, a truly modern Australian gin. Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin captures the essence of contemporary Australia?s heritage in Europe and Asia. We?re using whole oranges which is unusual but Australian citrus is highly aromatic and supports the spicier botanicals like cardamom. The cinnamon and star anise add rich fruitcake tones, the Tasmanian pepperberry leaf provides warmth rather than heat, and the lemon myrtle is a beautiful alternative to lemon peel.   The nose is almost literally fruity, with sweet notes of tropical fruit, lemongrass and orange peel with a touch if galangal-esque spice. The spirit smells incredibly clean. For those that are familiar with fruit base gins, the nose is completely without some of the fruity funk that is not-altogether-uncommon among other less traditional base spirits.
