1. Amrut Single Malt Indian Whisky

Distilled from barley grown at the North West of India, at an altitude that accelerates the aging process, this single malt exudes a harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation. Amrut ages their single malt in New American Oak and former bourbon barrels before it is ready for bottling.

Nose: Distinctly confidant liquorice-bourbon notes with near perfect bitter-sweet balance; burnt honeycomb and toffee also abound.

Taste: Outstanding richness and sheen to the enormous barley-oak sweetness; again there is a big bourbony cut to the cloth with all the liquorice and molassed sugar normally associated; but the barley adds that extra dimension.

Finish: Long, wonderfully layered oak offering variations of a sweet dry theme; a touch silky with some cream toffee at the death.

Awards won – Liquid Gold Award, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2010, Bronze Award Winner at Malt Maniacs Award 2008, 2009 and Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2012, USA, 88 Points, Very Good, Strong Recommendation

2. Amrut Rye Single Malt Indian Whisky

It stands as a distinctive and pioneering Indian whisky, distilled from malted rye sourced from Europe, matured for over 5 years in American oak barrels, and presented at a robust 50% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Nose: White peach, caramel, roses, bread dough, cassia buds.

Taste: Cherry, papaya, sauerbraten, cocoa, lemon, caramel bite candies. This tastes like it has been in a sherry cask. Or that it’s quite old and a bourbon and has big fruit.

Finish: Lemon, melon, dry sand, quince, honey, wood shavings, lime.

3. Amrut Portonova Single Malt Whisky

The aroma and taste of this single malt are distinctive and vibrant. Despite its full cask strength, the blend of raisins, vanilla, cherry liqueur, and spices provides an exceptionally smooth experience on the palate. Amrut Portonova undergoes maturation in ex-bourbon and new American oak barrels before being transferred to initial-fill Portuguese Port pipes, adding a unique touch to its flavor profile.

Nose: A Thick pudding of a nose; fruit and caramel have merged into one slightly over-oaked soup; burnt apple pie.

Taste: This is essentially a port pipe sandwich…. and it shows. The spicy, jammy fruit is interwoven through any amount of caramel while the oaky saltiness gets the taste buds both salivating and puckering until you run dry.

Finish: Long, massive oak with quite evident traces of the virgin barrels now detectable. And more of a cocoa hue as it progresses. At last some muscovado sugars arrive to supplant the berry fruits.

Awards won – Best Cask Innovation (Premium) at The Malt Maniacs Awards, 2011

4. Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt Whisky

Given the tropical climate of India, where peat cannot naturally develop, this variant utilizes peated Scottish barley. Distilled and aged at Amrut Distillery in Bangalore, the whisky matures in ex-Bourbon casks, reaching its peak expression. It is bottled at 46% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Nose: Unusually dry peat; not dissimilar to peat reek absorbed by an old leather armchair; a hint of citrus, too.

Taste: Despite the nose, the immediate sensation is one of being caressed by molassed sugar and then a ratcheting up of the peat notes. As they get more forceful, the experience becomes that little bit drier and spicier, though not without the molasses refusing to give way.

Finish: You can tell the quality of the distillate and the barrels it has been matured in by the crystalline depth to the finish. Everything is clear on the palate and the butterscotch vanillas wrap the phenols for a comfortable and clean finale.

Awards Won – Liquid Gold Award, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2010 and Bronze Award Winner at Malt Maniacs Award 2009

5. Amrut Intermediate Sherry Single Malt Whisky

Initially aged in new American oak and ex-bourbon casks, followed by maturation in sherry casks, and finally, a subsequent aging in ex-bourbon casks for its ultimate character development. This distinctive method is responsible for the coined term “Intermediate Sherry,” highlighting the role of sherry casks as a pivotal intermediary.

Nose: Instead of the usual biscuit aroma, we now get moist cake. And my word: is it fruity and spicy!! Love the freshly waxed oak floor, too. Brain-exploding complex and multi-layered with one of the most intriguing sherry-style-bourbon-style marriages on the market.

Taste: Cracking delivery and entirely unique in form. The structure is decidedly oak-based, but acts as no more than a skeleton from which the juicy sultana and spices drape. Salivating, too, as the barley kicks in powerfully. But the liquorice-orangey-honeycomb bourbon theme quietly shapes the flavor profile; the spices pulse and glow.

Finish: Quite a chunk of natural caramel quietens the more exuberant characteristics; long and elegant.

Awards Won – Liquid Gold Awards 2011, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2011 and Indian Whisky of the Year, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2011

6. Amrut Fusion Single Malt Whisky

A tale of two barley types— a fusion of Eastern and Western varieties. One is grown in the Punjab, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, malted in Delhi, while the other is cultivated and peated in Scotland. The bottled expression boasts a 50% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Nose: Heavy, thickly oaked and complex: some curious barley-sugar notes here shrouded in soft smoke. Big, but seductively gentle, too.

Taste: The delivery, though controlled at first, is massive! Then more like con-fusion as that smoke on the nose turns into warming, full blown peat, but it far from gets its own way as a vague sherry trifle note (curious, seeing how there are no sherry butts involved) – the custard presumably is oaky vanilla – hammers home that barley – fruitiness to make for a bit of a free-for-all; but for extra food measure the flavors develop into a really intense chocolate fudge middle which absolute resonates through the palate.

Finish: A slight struggle here as the mouthfeel gets a bit puffy here with the dry peat and oak; enough molasses sweetness to see the malt through to a satisfying end, though. Above all the spices, rather than lying down and accepting their fate, rise up and usher this extraordinary whisky to its exit.

Awards Won – Third Finest Whisky in the World, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2010, Rated 97/100, Grand Master of World Whisky at the Spirits Business Awards in London, 2011, Best Natural Cask Daily Drams award at Malt Maniacs Awards 2009, World Whisky of the Year, Malt Advocates Whisky Awards 2011 and Master 2001 at the Spirits Business Awards in London, 2011

7. Amrut Indian Single Malt Cask Strength Whisky

Crafted from non-peated Indian barley grown in the Himalayan foothills of Punjab, malted in the capital city of Delhi, and finally aged and distilled at Amrut Distillery in Bangalore. Bottled at its cask strength.

Nose: Classic house style with glorious bourbon notes fused with the richest of barley statements; not entirely unlike caramelized biscuit dunked in coffee; oh, and a bit of spicy attitude, too.

Taste: There we go with that unique bitter-sweet overture where the oaks and barley appear joined at the hip; lovely soft oils and then a sharp jolt of blood orange citrus, which is removed by something more buttery and delicate.

Finish: Long, elegant with the most intricate of fades with the oaks showing various bourbon then buttery characteristics; there is a trace of dark sugar and cocoa to help it along its way.

Awards Won – Bronze Award Winner at IWSC 2008, London, Silver Award Winner at Malt Maniacs Awards 2008 and Gold Medal Winner (91 Points) “Exceptional” at The 2013 International Review of Spirits
